Lab Tests Saved Anthony’s Life in Treating Chronic Kidney Disease

ASCP

At 22 years old, Anthony was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease. His diagnosis was a result of a hereditary condition called Horseshoe kidney, where kidneys fuse together during fetal development. Anthony underwent numerous lab tests which indicated that his kidneys were operating at an extremely low functioning level—so low that his medical team told him that it was a miracle he was still alive. He immediately received emergency dialysis and was put on a kidney transplant list. A few years later, he had the opportunity to receive a kidney transplant. The laboratory ran several tests to determine his compatibility with the donor and he was able to receive the transplant. After a successful kidney transplant, Anthony reflects on his medical journey, explaining how the laboratory played a crucial role in his diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Joseph Vassalotti, Chief Medical Officer of the National Kidney Foundation, also speaks to how the laboratory is highly involved in the decision making process for diagnoses such as Anthony’s. He explains how treatment plans are a shot in the dark without lab results and the work of lab professionals.
