The Lake Anne Cardboard Boat regatta is coming up on August 19th, 2023 – an event that my local makerspace, Nova Labs, has supported for years and one which I’ve always entered with my own take on what exactly a boat is.

I've been doing a series of boats based on the platonic solids and this is the last one. This video strolls through the history of my "boats" the Tetraheboat, the Wisdom Cube (yes, that is an Aqua Teen Hunger Force reference), Octahedramus Prime, the Dodecabecabananafanafofeca and now the Icosaheboat.

The regatta is put on by the Reston museum as a community event around Lake Anne Plaza, which is just a mile or so from the sites of Nova Labs 1.0 and 2.0. Nova Labs 3.0 is of course in Fairfax City, but Reston’s not too far away, the event’s still running and it’s pretty easy to enter and enjoy. The boats must be entirely cardboard, duct tape and watersoluble paints and glues – making a waterproof boat is generally a good idea, but soundly banned at this event – that’s just not what it’s for.
