In the early days when I just started sailing, I was crossing the Thames Estuary. There was no wind so I had the engine running in flat calm conditions. This car freighter ship went past at 20 knots and produced one of the biggest bow waves I seen to this date. I could see this ominous wave coming towards me sending my boat pointing to the sea and sky. I have gone past bigger passenger ships near Dover which produced next to no wave.
