Today we talk to Larry about his Saberwing experimental airplane. I covered this aircraft a while back. Here is a quick tour of the Saberwing aircraft    • $40,000 Saberwing Airplane: First Look   it’s an affordable 2 seater airplane from Azalea aviation that you build yourself. The standard engine for the Saberwing is a corvair 100HP engine.

The corvair is an auto conversion engine and does give you really good cruise performance at 150 miles per hour while only burning 6 gallons of fuel.

Larry, who recently built his Saberwing wanted something more powerful, more specifically for better climb rate. The 100 hp engine he initially had in the aircraft only climbed about 500 feet a minute. His new Lycoming 200 hp engine gives him a climb rate of 1800 feet plus per minute. That’s almost four times the performance in climb.

I also talked to Larry about his cockpit setup which is made up of 2 iPad air. Avionics is one of the most expensive options in an aircraft. But in the experimental world, that cost can be much less with he introduction of new technologies that will sync both engine and flight data right into your smartphone of tablet. Amazing what you can do here.
