As the US 3rd Armored Division fought its way towards Paderborn in late March 1945, trying to complete the encirclement of the Ruhr Pocket, one of its task forces was ambushed by a King Tiger battalion. In the resulting battle, King Tigers managed to smash up most of the task force and ended the action with the tragic shooting that took the life of the 3rd Armored's popular commander, MajorGeneral Maurice Rose.
