This writing workshop lesson was adapted from the Kinder Unit 1 session: We Are All Writers and the 1st Grade Unit 1 session: Lives Are Full of Stories to Tell.

This writing workshop video was taped on the sixth day of school with a classroom full of eager, brighteyed 1st graders who have never implemented the workshop structure before. It always seems a little nerve wrecking to launch so much information in the very beginning of the year, much less the very first days of school… because it feels as though the students will have trouble processing the minilesson. But we should know that students will always thrive and approximate the best they can. We must change their mindset of “I can’t, it’s too hard, I’ll never get it...” to “I can, it’s not that hard, and I’ll keep trying the best that I can!”

Everyone was pleased to see the students choose different topics to write about and go off to try it at their desks.
