Welcome to "Learn Everyday English" where we use words, phrases and situations from everyday life to help you learn and improve your English.

In this video I go over common words, phrases and sentences that people use in Texas, here in the United States. You'll be speaking like a Texan in no time! Watch the video to find out more. Also, below you will find the different examples used in the video.

1.) Howdy = Hello
Example: Howdy Y’all

2.) Y’all = You All
Example: Howdy Y’all; What are Y’all Doing Tonight?

3.) Dropping the “n” at the end of words
Examples: Taking = Takin He sure is Takin his time!
Making = Makin I’m Makin a dress.
Walking = Walkin I’m Walkin my (ma) dog

4.) Whatcha … ? = What Are You …?
o Doing = Doin Whatcha Doin?
o Eating = Eatin Whatcha Eatin?
o Reading = Readin Whatcha Readin?
o Thinking = Thinkin Whatcha Thinkin About (Bout)

5.) Fixin To (Ta) /Fixin = Getting Ready To ; Preparing
o I’m fixin to go somewhere
o She’s fixin dinner tonight

6.) Uh Huh = Yeah = Yep = Yes
o Did you hear what I said? Uh Huh / Yeah / Yep
o Did you like the food? Uh Huh / Yeah / Yep, it was good!

7.) Ain’t = Am Not; Are Not (Aren’t); Is Not (Isn’t)
o I ain’t doin it
o You ain’t going nowhere = You are not going anywhere
o He ain’t my friend anymore = He is not my friend anymore
o We ain’t dating, we’re just friends = We are not dating, we are just friends
o That ain’t mine = That isn’t mine = That is not mine

8.) Gonna = Going To
o I ain’t gonna do it = I am not going to do it
o That ain’t gonna happen = That isn’t going to happen

9.) Off (used along with other words)
o Pissed Off = Angry, mad He’s really pissed off
o Hacked Off = Angry, mad She’s hacked off
o Ticked Off = Angry, mad I really ticked him off = I really made him mad
o Well Off = Rich, wealthy Their family is well off
o Bad off = Very sick, In a bad situation He has stomach cancer, he’s real bad off
o Bad off = In a bad situation Both parents lost their jobs, their family is bad off

10.) Dough = Money; A lot of money
o Their family has a lot of dough = Their family is (very) rich / (very) wealthy
o They are rollin in the dough = They are very rich!

I am a retired engineer who has taught English As A Second Language and enjoy teaching people new things. I am also a language learner myself as I am learning Spanish so I know what it is like to try and learn a foreign language.
