In 1994, Nelson Mandela was elected President of South Africa and gave hope to a country so long divided by apartheid. But 14 years later, the dream of a reconciled, peaceful nation where life is good has been shattered. The country, although the richest on the African continent, is in the grip of incredible violence. With 3 times more attacks and 20 times more murders than in France, it also holds the world record for rapes.
Johannesburg, the economic capital, concentrates all these difficulties. Villas transformed into bunkers, bars on the windows, grilles reinforcing the doors, how do we live there on a daily basis? In the inner suburbs, in the former black ghetto of Alexandra, the law of the jungle reigns supreme. With what means do a handful of residents try to restore order in a city which has twice as many private security agents as police officers?
Why are the security forces unable to stem this outbreak of violence?
