The mayfly hatch is one of the most challenging times of the year for most anglers. Why? Because walleyes switch their diet to focus almost entirely on emerging mayfly larvae. Why would a walleye chase a minnow when there’s an easy, abundant, and nutritious food source right along the bottom? Exactly they wouldn’t. There are roughly 120 mayfly larvae in every square meter along the bottom, making it a buffet for walleyes. So, how do you catch these fish that are keyed in on mayflies? We spoke with biologist Bev Ritchie in a Reason podcast and got the rundown on walleye behaviour during the hatch. We do a onetwopunch method based on science to locate the clusters of fish and then pick them apart.
