The Four Seasons is an American rock and pop band that had international success in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1960, the band known as The Four Lovers became the Four Seasons, with Frankie Valli, (Francesco Stephen Castelluccio) as lead singer, Bob Gaudio on keyboards and tenor vocals, Tommy DeVito on lead guitar and baritone vocals, and Nick Massi on electric bass and bass vocals. "Let's Hang On" is a song composed by Bob Crewe, Sandy Linzer, and Denny Randell that was made popular by The Four Seasons in 1965. The single reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles charts. This was the last hit for Four Seasons in which bassist Nick Massi appeared. He was temporarily replaced by the band's arranger Charles Calello before Joe Long came in as Massi's fulltime replacement. The popularity of "Let's Hang On" has been attributed to the inclusion of several devices on the recording: a twoline introduction sung by lead singer Frankie Valli, the use of two fuzz guitars (one guitarist playing low notes, another playing high on a bass guitar), a refrain sung in falsetto and backing vocals that provide counterpoint to Valli's lead vocals. He reestablished the group's presence in the Top Ten as The Four Seasons were in a flurry of activity, recording albums as both The Four Seasons as supporting musicians for Valli's revived "solo" career.
In 1995, The Manhattan Transfer covered the song on their album Tonin' with guest lead vocals from original singer Frankie Valli. The album reached number 123 on the Billboard 200. The Manhattan Transfer is a vocal group of American origin related mainly to jazz, but also to other musical genres. It was formed in New York in 1972 when Tim Hauser met Laurel Massé during a taxi ride and they both discovered their affinity for the same kind of music. Laurel later also met Janis Siegel, at the time a singer in a folk group, and convinced her to join the project. Finally, the initial formation was completed with Alan Paul, heartthrob and singer on Broadway, New York, on October 1, 1972, which is considered the founding date of the group. In 1978 Laurel Massé suffered a serious car accident that forced her to leave the band and was replaced by Cheryl Bentyne. This lineup, Hauser, Siegel, Paul and Bentyne, has remained unchanged until Tim Hauser's death in 2014.
