Mitral valve replacement is a surgical procedure in which the damaged or diseased mitral valve of the heart is replaced by either a tissue or mechanical valve. The total recovery time is 1 to 2 months. The hospital stay is of about 7 days, including at least 1 to 3 days in ICU.

Liquid or light diet with low amounts of salt is recommended for 23 days.

Shower is allowed after 5 days, however, sponge baths can be taken till then. Keep the incision dry when you shower by keeping your back turned to the shower spray.

Light cooking, tidying up, flower arranging and clothes washing can all be started after 2 weeks of surgery.

Driving can be resumed after around 6 weeks.

Work can be resumed after 6 to 8 weeks only if the job involves light work. Labour jobs can be resumed after 23 months.

Avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for 3 months.
