Welcome, everyone, to the story of Bernadette Soubirous, a young girl known as the Saint Bernadette.

Bernadette Soubirous was born on January 7 1844 in Lourdes, France a small town in the Pyrenees, the eldest of 6 children to Francis Soubirous and Louise Caserot. Her family once prosperous millers fell into financial hardship when her fathers water mill faced competition from steampowered mills. By 1854 they were forced to vacate their home due to financial difficulties.

In 1855 a cholera epidemic struck Lourdes, claiming 38 lives and leaving Bernadette with chronic asthma. They changed homes several times, each time cheaper and smaller until they were housed for free in a single dark, and, unsanitary room in the city's old prison, the Cachot.
During this time Bernadette suffered from chronic asthma and could not go to school. She could neither read nor write and spoke only the dialect of her area.

Tragedy continued to afflict the Soubirous family when Bernadette's father was falsely accused of theft and imprisoned in 1857. He was released a week later through lack of evidence and returned a broken man to the Cachot.

Desperate to provide Bernadette with a better life her parents sent her to live with a relative who reared sheep. 1 day in autumn when her father paid her a visit, she told him that she wished to return home. She returned to Lourdes during the month of her birthday and was finally able to attend school with her sister.
It was a cold winter, and they could not afford to buy firewood, so they would send their children into the woods to gather sticks. On a Thursday morning, Bernadette asked her mother for permission to gather firewood with her sister and a friend. Her mother informed her to wrap herself as she had asthma. While collecting firewood near the grotto of Massabielle, Bernadette experienced 18 apparitions of the Virgin Mary.

We will delve deeper into these apparitions in another video!!

After the final apparition, Bernadette resumed her life with simplicity and devotion, eventually deciding to enter the convent of Nevers to serve the sick and the poor. Despite her illness, she frequently fell ill but never complained. She passed away on April 16, 1879, at the convent of Saint Gildard, and her incorrupt body is displayed in the main chapel of the sanctuary in Nevers, France.
