Lift and drag [Fluid Mechanics #15]

Follow
Prof. Van Buren

In this video, we zoom out from the flow itself and start to consider the impact of a fluid on a body moving through it. We are constantly travelling through air/water, and many vehicles are designed to more easily move through and manipulate the fluid. This is the field of aerodynamics (air) and hydrodynamics (water). The primary body forces are Lift and Drag.

Forces on a body come from pressure (normal to a surface) and viscous shear (tangential to a surface). Reoriented to the direction of travel, these become the Lift and Drag. We discuss how the drag and lift forces are normalized into coefficients, and how those coefficients change with shape and flow characteristics.
