The Lisbon Metro received the first three carriages as part of the expansion of the Lisbon Metro. A total of 39 more are expected to arrive.

According to a statement from the company, the acquisition of these new carriages, as part of the Lisbon Metro Expansion and Modernization Plan, represents an investment of 72.7 million euros and "constitutes a significant step forward in the innovation and modernization of the Lisbon Metro, with a consequent improvement in service quality and availability."

Each carriage in a triple unit weighs 30 tons, is 16 meters long, 2.80 meters wide, and 3.50 meters high. Among the features of the new carriages are large windows, door panels, and circulation areas with more free space, which will allow for faster boarding and alighting.

According to information provided by the transport company, each triple unit has 90 seats, of which 30 are priority seats, identified by a different color, with space to secure two wheelchairs.

The carriages, which arrived by TIR trucks from Valencia, Spain, were unloaded in the morning at the company's Material and Workshop Park in Pontinha (Odivelas municipality).

The Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, who oversees urban transport, was present when the new carriages arrived.

Miguel Pinto Luz stated that the new equipment is "more modern" and "has the potential to be operated automatically."

As of 2011, the rolling stock of the Lisbon Metro consisted of 338 carriages, of which 225 were electric motor cars (powered by a third rail) and 113 were nonmotorized trailers. (This fleet had reached a maximum of 361 units in 1999.) Except for the first series, withdrawn in 2000, all of the ML vehicles, though ordered and acquired in various series, have a homogeneous appearance, making them difficult to distinguish for the casual observer.
