Follow
Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness

Families with children were protected under fair housing laws in 1988, yet fair housing violations continue to occur in a variety of formats including outright denials, restrictive occupancy standards, rules or policies targeting children, and bias in advertising among others. In this workshop, hear about cases challenging fair housing violations and best practices to ensure housing open to qualified families with children.

Course outcomes:
Participants will gain an understanding of the protections afforded to families with children and other groups that face an increased likelihood of being denied equal housing opportunity; be able to describe common fair housing violations impacting families with children; and be able to identify available agencies and forums for initiating enforcement actions for families with children and other protected populations.

Participants will walk away knowing:
Fair Housing rights of families with children and Fair Housing responsibilities of housing providers.

Target Population for Audience:
Advocates and agencies serving families with children and housing providers, rental property managers, landlords, etc.

Instructors
Liz Keegan, Fair Housing Center of West Michigan; Steve Tomkowiak, Fair Housing Center of Metropolitan Detroit
