What is Liver Cancer? Your liver is an organ that sits in the upper right portion of your abdomen, just beneath your diaphragm, and it plays a crucial role in numerous bodily functions, such as filtering blood, producing bile for digestion, and creating proteins essential for blood clotting and other processes. Liver cancer is simply when cells in the liver begin to grow uncontrollably. Cells are the building blocks of our body, and normally, they grow and divide to form new cells as the body needs them. When cells get old or damaged, they die, and new cells take their place. However, when cancer develops, this orderly process breaks down. Cells become more and more abnormal, and old or damaged cells survive when they should die, and new cells form when they are not needed. These extra cells can divide without stopping and may form growths called tumors.
This abnormal growth we were talking about can either originate within the liver itself, which is known as primary liver cancer, or sometimes the cancer can start elsewhere in the body and spreads to the liver, which is known as secondary or metastatic liver cancer. Common cancers that spread to the liver include colorectal cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, and melanoma. In fact, in many parts of the world, secondary liver cancers are more common than primary liver cancers. But in this video, we are focusing on primary cancer that starts in the liver itself.
