Lo-Fi Ambient: Recreating the Sound and Echo of Forgotten Machines

The Digital Lost

Hello there. This is a broken sounding, lofi ambient style piece with production notes. If you have any further questions or comments about how I do things, please go ahead below.

This is another piece that came about on an early Sunday morning. I woke with the sad feeling of lost machinery. A forgotten factory. A rusty spaceship floating through the universe. Just something immense, once important, that had been left to rust and rot. The echo of its existence still passing through as radio waves, occasionally being picked up, but disappearing again.

As always, this will sound best when listened to through decent headphones or speakers, a melancholic and sleep deprived mind, and whatever other substances that might help you.

As well as trying to recreate a mood and memory, this was also me rediscovering my Modal Skulpt. It's not that I forgot about this machine of mine. Not at all. But I had been getting so into Eurorack of late, everything else just kind of got pushed back. It was a pleasure to marry the 2 worlds: my Skulpt that, on its own, can generate some deep and immense sounds, played through some Eurorack effects. I am happy with the process and result.

So, gear used: the initial "winds" are from Mutable Instruments Plaits filtered noise mode. This is subtly modulated by Pamela's New Workout to help create movement. The main melody is from the Modal Skulpt. This goes through the EHX Canyon Delay via the ALM SBG module, then back in through the Erica Synths Pico DSP. This is set to saturated reverb; a very metallic reverb that gets dirty and rusty very easily. Everything finishes up going through the Tiptop Audio Zverb module set to the 70s era Epic Mod Hall.
