In Germany, mostly voluntary associations operate about 200 steam locomotives in the museum
and tourist operations. In addition to the valuable cultural, technical and historical significance
the steam locomotive like no other means of traction as a popular figure among young and old and
promotes the environmentally friendly means of transport, the railway. For this reason, the operational
It is essential to maintain and promote the preservation of these historic vehicles. In the tourist

structurally weak areas.
In times of coal phaseout, skyrocketing prices, climate change, CO2 taxation and supply difficulties with hard coal of suitable quality the operators of steam locomotives are faced with the question of how to master the plannable and affordable operation of their historical cultural assets in the future.

The research project "Development of a highperformance combustion system suitable for steam locomotive operation for renewable raw materials" is looking for solutions for safe steam locomotive operation in the future and relies on wood pellets.
In our documentation, we accompanied the engineering office Steam Technologies and Eisenbahnfreunde Hasetal on this important project.
