Tarikh Episode 613

In this episode of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about an unforgettable defeat of Britain's Lord Gerard Lake in 1805. For a month and twentytwo days, relentless efforts to conquer a fort persisted. Despite powerful empires succumbing to the British, this fort stood unconquered. Lord Lake, once the victor in the 1798 Irish Rebellion, now faced a reversal. The formidable Lohagarh Fort in Bharatpur thwarted British forces and, historically, even the Mughals. The fort, surrounded by deep trenches and boasting towers, resisted advanced weaponry. Known as the "Iron Fort," Lohagarh's design included formidable walls that absorbed powerful attacks. Today, this rectangular fort preserves a unique history of resilience. Its construction, safeguarding against external threats, reflects an engineering marvel. Lohagarh, the impregnable fortress, not only symbolizes architectural brilliance but also embodies the spirit of defiance against formidable odds.
In that era, Shah Alam II was merely a nominal Mughal emperor, as real power resided with the Rohillas' leader, Najib ud Daulah. A battle ensued between Maharaja Suraj Mal and Najib ud Daulah, resulting in Suraj Mal's demise. Following this, Maharaja Suraj Mal's son, Jawahar Singh, ascended to the throne of Bharatpur. Seeking revenge for his father's death, Jawahar Singh marched towards Delhi.
Raja Jawahar Singh, defeating Najib, constructed the 'Jawahar Burj' in Lohagarh Fort, a symbol of Jat victory over the Mughals. The Jat dynasty ruled Bharatpur extensively, but the East India Company's influence loomed large. In 1805, British commander Gerard Lake faced difficulties besieging Bharatpur. Despite multiple offensives, the fort's impregnability earned it the moniker 'Lohagarh' or Iron Fort. Lake, known for ruthless tactics, found Bharatpur unconquerable. Maharaja Ranjit Singh later commemorated Jat resilience with 'Fateh Burj,' signifying triumph. The towers, 'Jawahar Burj' and 'Fateh Burj,' stand as enduring symbols of Bharatpur's unyielding history. Beyond military tales, Bharatpur's Lohagarh Fort boasts architectural marvels like Kishori Mahal, Mahal Khas, and Kothi Khas, inviting travelers to explore a rich tapestry of history. For those venturing to Rajasthan, Bharatpur and its Lohagarh Fort offer a glimpse into a bygone era, where strength and heritage converge.
