A group of dedicated volunteers are working to bring back to life a nineteenth century lighthouse in North Queensland.

Once restored to working condition, the Pine Islet Lighthouse on Mackay's coast will become the only fully functioning kerosenepowered lighthouse in Australia, and one of the last of its kind in the world.

It was commissioned in 1885 on nearby Pine Islet Island where it remained stationed for a century.

Hundreds of people are tied to the history of this beacon, including lighthouse keepers and their families, people delivering stores to the island, and mariners being guided to safe passage.
