LOOK SEE WATCH! How do we use these verbs?

The English Experience

Look, See, and Watch! Many English learners are confused about these words. When do we use look? When do we use see? When do we use watch? We use see when we are talking about anything that comes across our line of vision. Seeing is passive. By contrast, looking is active. We are focusing on something specific. When we look, we are extracting information from the world around us. Watching involves movement. When we watch, we are monitoring changes or movement. For example, you can watch the children play! Many people use look at and watch interchangeably, and in most cases this is acceptable because they are both active. For example, I can look at TV, or I can Watch TV!
