The irony of “Play for Keeps” is that doing something with seriousness and ferocity and nothing held back IS the fun way to do it, just watch any short hair bounding through chestdeep snow, watch any upland hunter’s fingers wrap around the icy steel receiver of a shotgun. Not many folks out there play for keeps better than a working or a hunting dog; they live for the intensity of their task, their desire to succeed at their job doesn’t stop at good enough. The second that shorthair nose hits the dirt, they’re invested.
