The cause of lumbar radiculopathy is inflammation or compression of an intervertebral nerve root. The reasons for nerve compression or inflammation can vary.

Disc herniation is the most common cause of lumbar radiculopathy. Usually this occurs with aging. When an intervertebral disc becomes dry, its edges can crack.

Osteophytes in the spine also can cause compression and inflammation of intervertebral nerve roots in the lumbar portion of the spine.

With age, ligaments that bind the spine together become thickened and stiff. This condition can cause bulging ligaments into the spinal canal, compressing intervertebral nerves in the lumbar region.

Lumbar radiculopathy can develop due to tumors that grow in the spaces between the spinal cord and vertebrae.

Spinal trauma, such as vertebral fractures, can cause dislocation of bone fragments and compression of nerve roots.
