In her latest work using the Institutional Cancer Registry at Johns Hopkins Medicine, rheumatologist Laura Cappelli has uncovered that patients with an autoimmune rheumatic disease (such as scleroderma, lupus, or psoriatic arthritis) and lung cancer received a cancer diagnosis earlier than lung cancer patients without a rheumatic disease. Her findings also indicate that patients with both conditions had better clinical and survival outcomes. Cappelli explains the research and possibilities of how these differences occur ahead of her presentation at the American College of Rheumatology 2022 annual conference.
