What is Lung Cancer? Lung cancer is a serious and often lifethreatening condition that occurs when cells in the lungs grow and divide uncontrollably, forming tumors that can spread to other parts of the body. When you breathe in, air travels down your windpipe or trachea and into your lungs through two large tubes called bronchi. Inside the lungs, these tubes divide into smaller branches, eventually becoming tiny air sacs called alveoli. This is where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place. Lung cancer can start in any part of the lungs, but most commonly begins in the cells lining the bronchi and parts of the lung such as the bronchioles or alveoli. As these cells grow abnormally and uncontrollably, they can form tumors that interfere with the lung's ability to function properly.
