Learn the difference between main verbs vs auxiliary verbs in English grammar. Verbs are one of the parts of speech in English and are used to describe actions in sentences. A verb tells us about an action or a state of being. There are many types of verbs, but today's lesson will focus on main verbs vs auxiliary (helping) verbs.

Main verbs can stand alone in sentences without auxiliary verbs.
Examples:
• Kathy runs every morning.
• The lazy cat slept on the mat.
• Mr. Thompson writes novels.
(Note the main verbs "run," "slept," and "writes" in these examples.)

Auxiliary verbs help the main verb to form tense, mood, or voice. Common auxiliary verbs include "be", "do", and "have". They cannot stand alone and always accompany a main verb.

Examples:
• Laura is running. (is = auxiliary verb; running = main verb).
• They have eaten dinner. (have = auxiliary verb; eaten = main verb).
• Do you know George? (do = auxiliary verb; know = main verb).

This lesson will explore main verbs vs auxiliary verbs in more detail. At the end of this lesson, there will be a short quiz to test your knowledge!
