Lots of ink has been spilled about playing the diatonic arpeggios of the major scale, but in my time here on youtube I've seen scant little information for budding improvisers about the major 6 chord. If you're hip to Barry Harris' famous methodology, this sound is absolutely integral to his systems for improvisation. In this guide, I'm gonna teach you all about playing the major 6 chord on the guitar in as many different ways as I can.

We'll start out by playing the inversions of this chord as single notes, organized by groups of strings. Then, we'll talk about some different ways we can sequence these inversions in order to create unique patterns for improvised solos. Then, I'll show you how I like to practice this sound over the entire range of the guitar and how doing so is an incredible level up for your guitar technique. We'll also learn how to evoke the sound of drop three chords by playing arpeggios consisting of much wider intervals than you might typically play. Finally, we'll wrap things up by learning a short etude over a static Bbmaj7 chord so as to see how this sound plays over a major7 chord.
