Making a Steel and Wood American Flag

Antics Garage

First off, while working on this project, our country (along with the rest of the planet) has plunged into a state of total hysteria in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. It's pretty weird and scary out there as I'm typing this, and youtube videos about artwork are probably the last thing on most people's minds. However, our United States Flag has always represented solidarity, strength, and unity in the face of opposition so why not now, even when that opposition is a tiny, nasty little virus. So, maybe this video is actually coming out at the perfect time. Anyways...

Join us as we create a commissioned piece of American flag artwork. The plasma cut steel graphics were chemically treated with muriatic acid, a liquid gun blue solution, and hydrogen peroxide to achieve the blue and red colors, then the white stars and stripes show through to a distress painted plywood background. The entire thing is capped off by some aged cedar edge banding made from an old fence.

Beware, some of the chemicals used on this project were pretty nasty. So if you're going to try any of these processes, please take all necessary safety precautions and read all of the labels and safety warnings. Just be careful out there!
