Here is a procedure to produce elemental bromine using KMnO4 as an oxidizer. Mn7+ in KMnO4 steals electrons from Br in HBr, converting it to Br2, a red, extremely reactive and volatile liquid. Do not attempt this if you do not have a background in chemistry, bromine is even deadly and can easy injure or kill you.
