Hi there! I am Joseph.
I have been an expat living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana for six years now.

Together Mariana and I, along with my father Clinton and my brother in law Lloyd, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food!

In this episode we welcome you to join us in the Spring time as we continue our cherry harvest into the end of our first week of the season. The year seems to be more forgiving than I first thought, fortunately. We explain a little about the 'ins and outs' involved in farming cherries on a small scale organic fruit farm in central Portugal, plus some handy hints on how you could make money by being an expat in central Portugal, selling fruit and producing your families own food.

I get hold of some pasture raised pork neckbone, from our friend in the village who rears his own Duroc pork, a pig with red hair and excellent genes! We BBQ the pork and eat alfresco poolside. The recipe is available mid way through the episode. accompanied of course, with some cherry pan sauce and a cherry relish, 'tis the season after all!

Lloyd and I go visit an agricultural shop in the local town of Fundão to purchase some 2kg and 5kg boxes for wholesaling the cherries.

We have some difficulties getting our sheep down to a fresh pasture meadow, they refuse to leave the maternity meadow where they have become accustomed, but never the less we persevere and get those lambs down to the fresh, greener grass, thanks to Lloyd managing to catch poor Rosemary!

We take a short look at one of the nesting Muscovy ducks, she is sitting on a large clutch of eggs and we are hoping she shows us some ducklings shortly!

Right at the end of the video I take a long awaited sit down by the pond and speak a little about all the goings on this week on the smallholding. Lilly joins me for a while, before she hears her sister barking, letting us know someone has arrived at the gates!

See our journey to self sufficiency / permaculture / organic farming as expats living in Portugal, trying to produce as much of our own food planting vegetables, growing fruit trees as well as looking after all our animals, such as our chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, quail, rabbits and sheep Shortly pigs too!
