So male pelvic pain occurs in about 10% of healthy male patients. So the male pelvis essentially is a sling of muscles. This muscle structure essentially contains certain organs, which are the prostates, seminal vesicles, rectum and the bladder. Also in the pelvic floor of the male, there are two openings. One's the anus or rectum, the other opening is where the urethra passes through from the bladder to the penis, which allows for urination.

In the clinic, in terms of male patients, we see a variety of patients, starting from younger patients who are more athletic, those patients typically have sports type injuries, those are men who do a lot of biking, are lifting at the gym, have a lot of sexual intercourse. We also see males with high stress jobs, whose jobs entail prolonged sitting, and also see males post operative for pelvic pain conditions, like IE prostatectomy or resolution of anal fissures and hemorrhoids.

So pelvic pain conditions in males are more common than people think and unfortunately, often male patients suffer needlessly with pelvic pain. They're quite embarrassed by it, they don't want to tell anybody about it, and they often don't seek treatment. So if a male patient does have pelvic pain, it's important to address that, because quite often the condition is resolvable.
