On February 2nd, 2023, officers in Florida responded to a bomb threat at the Orlando International Airport. The incident unfolded after a passenger traveling with his wife, expressing his frustration over baggage fees on a Spirit Airlines flight, claimed there was a bomb on the aircraft. Upon hearing the passenger's statement, the airline supervisor called 911 and waited for officers and other services to arrive. Officers arrived at the gate and met with the airline staff and passengers to learn further what had happened.

The passenger told officers that he had gotten into a dispute with staff over his carryon luggage, leading to him stating, "What if there was a bomb in that plane.” The airline supervisor also met with the officers at the gate and told officers the passenger had gotten upset over carryon fees. She told the officers the passenger then stated, "I bet you, everyone on that aircraft is going to deplane; there is a bomb on that aircraft.” leading her to call 911. Eyewitnesses, including Spirit employees, corroborated hearing the statement from the passenger.

Airport protocol mandated the evacuation of the aircraft and utilized checks by K9 units of the aircraft due to the nature of the incident. However, checks confirmed no actual threat to public safety, letting the airline continue operations. The suspect was trespassed from the Orlando International Airport and charged with making a false report concerning planting a bomb, an explosive, or a weapon of mass destruction.

This offense is a seconddegree felony in the state of Florida, a serious offense. If found guilty, the suspect could possibly face penalties of up to 15 years in prison, 15 years of probation, and a fine of up to $10,000.
