In this episode of Tarikh, Nikhil narrates the history of Manipur, located in northeastern India.
The princely state of Manipur emerged in the 18th century under the rule of King Pamheiba, who consolidated the region and established a centralised administration. Manipur maintained its independence until the late 19th century when the British East India Company gradually extended its influence over the region. In 1891, Manipur was officially annexed by the British and became a princely state under their control.
After India gained independence in 1947, Manipur became part of the Indian Union. In 1949, it was merged with India as a Part C state. Later, in 1956, Manipur became a fullfledged union territory. Finally, in 1972, Manipur attained statehood within the Indian federal system.
Overall, the history of Manipur as a princely state reflects a complex blend of independence, foreign rule, and eventual integration into the Indian Union, shaping the presentday identity of the state.
