WSU Library

Professor Richard Yang joined the School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics in January 2012 as Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Smart Structures and was promoted to Professor in 2018. Prior to this, Richard held the position of Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the School of Engineering, Deakin University. Prior to his almost sixyear tenure at Deakin University, he has also worked at the University of Sydney (USyd) and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) as a postdoctoral research fellow after completing his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) in 2002. Professor Yang was awarded the Graduate Certificate for Higher Education by Deakin University in 2008.

In research, he has been mainly focused on computational mechanics, with more than 25 years experience in the characterisation of advanced manufacturing, Industry 4.0, metal forming, metal surface treatment, material properties and mechanical behaviours via numerical modelling and simulations, including multiscale modelling of advanced engineering materials and structures, structural health monitoring (SHM) and smart structures.

In this event, Professor Yang shares how the future of manufacturing can support a circular economy through innovative recycling practices.

Western Sydney University was placed first in the world in the 2022, 2023 and 2024 Times Higher Education Impact rankings, the only global performance measure that assesses universities against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The event series aims to celebrate and promote this #1 ranking, complementing work being undertaken across the University as part of its Sustainability and Resilience Decadal Strategy 2030.
