This is a 10 year old female Chiweenie (Chihuahua and Dachshund) that I adopted from a rescue Sunday afternoon. She has very large ears like a Kangaroo, came with the name Minnie, so we've named her Minnie Roo. She's very thin, underweight, and has dandruff. Today I'll give her an oatmeal dog shampoo bath to see if that helps relieve the dandruff. We have an appointment with our vet in a couple of weeks, for a full checkup.
When introducing a new member to a pack, it's important to go as slow as the new dog needs to decompress from all the changes it's experiencing. When we first brought her home, I had Lola, Betty, and Smiley in the house. I brought her to the backyard and gave her awhile to roam and sniff by herself.
It's best to introduce the calmest, sweetest member of the pack first, and one at a time. So, I let her meet Betty first, then Lola several minutes later, and finally Smiley. Everyone got along well. All of the dogs are good, so it was easy.
Once Minnie Roo met them alone, I let them all into the yard together. It went well.
I have many dog gates throughout the house and let her into the kitchen first. She sniffed around, and got used to the room for about 15 minutes. Then I slowly opened each room of the house over 2 hours and let her investigate. There are still parts of the house she hasn't seen, but will over time.
I held a small dog treat through the partially lifted dog door and she climbed through to get it. After 4 times, she understood how to go in and out.
They all ate dinner in the evening, and Minnie Roo fell asleep after she found an open dog crate that she claimed as her safe spot. The other dogs respected her space and left her alone.
