March AFB and Kraft Foods Suspense Theater meet in 1965

I Remember The Inland Empire

After finding the Twilight Zone Video from Norton I tried to find some footage from March, and I did.

It was from Kraft Suspense Theater in 1965. It starred Martin Milner (Between his Route 66 and Adam12 gigs), and he played a copilot who was afraid of flying. (not a good trait for an Air Force pilot).

In the story in a routine flight from March to Spain they have an onboard fire incapacitating the pilot, so Milner is forced to take command and return to March (include a refueling with a KC135) They story was not as interesting as the Twilight Zone at Norton, but there is about 5 minutes of flightline footage in the video that make it interesting. I would say the scrip was “cheesy”, but it would be a cheap pun since the sponsor is Kraft Foods.

I included an interior scene and I am not sure if it in a studio, or was actually Base Ops. I was only in Base Ops once (that I can remember) and the room looks vaguely familiar, but maybe someone remembers it better than I. The other thing I did not remember that March was home to a squadron of C119 Flying Boxcars, and I am not sure why they were relevant to a SAC base. The story is based in a B47, but ty the time I was working on base there were nothing but B52s in the Alert Pad.

Regardless, I enjoyed memories of the old flight line and the old control tower, and especially the main gate.
