You can win and lose at the same time. While Bowletta does the shooting star attack, Mario and Luigi can die by the attack but also finish Bowletta off with it. This was done using an emulator, but I assure you it can be done with a physical copy (I discovered this on accident years ago). Once the screen goes black it will stay that way until the game is turned off.
