MAROON BELLS TRAVERSE

The ninja on the mountains

This is a video of the Maroon Bells Traverse as is done the standard route from Maroon Peak to North Maroon. The Maroon Bells have always been intimidating to me, so I saved them for when I was a little more experienced with the mountains. Today the stars line up and we were able to get a nice group of 5 guys including one of them that had previously done it. I drove from Colorado Springs after work and drove all the way to Aspen made it to the overnight lot at 12:55 am literally with 5 minutes to spare from the set time of 1:00 am departure. So that meant NO SLEEP! we had made up our minds on a sunrise summit, so I grabbed my bags and started the journey was a beautiful night with an almost full moon. We made good time on the first few miles, but the steep incline to the South ridge was very tough and slowmoving, at times I found myself closing my eyes and almost dosing off as I climbed the loose rocky terrain. Once we made it to the first class 3 moves the adrenaline woke me up although all moves were easy I knew I had to be focused. Made it to the summit of Maroon Peak 14,156 ft at 5:55 am just in time for a spectacular sunrise. Hanged out at the summit for 1.5 hr the longest time I have ever spent at any summit. We set at for the at 7:30 am it was starting to warm up a bit at this point. The downclimb section to the Bell Cord couloir was the worst for me, is very loose choss rock had to watch every step. After reaching the lowest point is mostly scramble uphill with few ledges traverses and minor downclimbs. There are a few other class 4 moves along the way on chossy rock, but all 3 cruxes have pretty solid rock and good holds I would say 5.4 to 5.5 class difficulty just very exposed. Made it to the summit of Noth Maroon Peak 14,014 ft at 9:00am, riding on adrenaline only at this point celebrated at the top, took a few photos and down we went. The downhill from North Maroon is no joke, but we made our way down the standard route and made it back to Maroon Lake by 12:00pm wiped out. 15 miles, 5,900ft gain and 8:30hrs of moving time with no sleep, WORTH IT 100%!!!
