Marvão Portugal Walking tour

Marvão is a small fortified village located at the top of a high cliff. As its narrow streets are very narrow, it is not advisable to drive a vehicle inside the village.

That's why there are several parking spaces available near the Ródão gate that gives access to the village.

A wall of fortification surrounds the village of Marvão and it is possible to go up and down from it at different places. That's what we did.

The village is very pretty with its entirely white houses with red tile roofs.

During our walk, we saw some religious buildings including the church of Calvary (igreja do Calvário) which is rather original since it is polygonal in shape, the church of São Tiago with its bell tower and the church of Santa Maria in which one finds the municipal museum.

Right next to São Tiago Church, there is a staircase leading to the summit of a small promontory. I invite you to go there to get a better view of the castle overlooking the village.

At the foot of the castle, there is a pretty green garden in the shape of a labyrinth and a fountain.

We entered the castle grounds. Usually, there is an entrance fee of 1.50 euro. However, a message was posted stating that the entrance was free, given the presence of a multitude of mosquitoes.

Indeed, we noticed their presence at the entrance to the passage leading to the tank. It was really amazing! It was impossible to get inside because a cloud of insects drove us away immediately.

Inside the castle, there is a small shop selling souvenirs as well as refreshments and snacks.

Walking on the top of the castle walls, we enjoy a breathtaking view of the village and the vast plains of this region.

We then walked in the village which has streets paved with very narrow stones. Some facades of houses are adorned with pretty wrought iron balconies.

Before leaving Marvão, we stopped for a short moment at the Convent of Our Lady of the Star (Convento de Nossa Senhora da Estrela) to take some pictures and then we went to the Sever Rio Hotel in Portagem where we will spend the next night.
