Massage for flexor hallucis brevis | Trigger point therapy

The flexor hallucis brevis often goes under the radar, especially when dealing with medial arch pain in lower limb athletes. More often than not, clinicians will reach for plantar fasciitis before considering this tissue.

The origin point for the flexor hallucis brevis is at the cuboid bone, where it runs under the medial arch the insertion point at the proximal points of the big toe. It's buried quite deep under four layers of tissue, which makes palpating it almost impossible.

You'll find trigger points almost anywhere along the length of the muscle. Treating it starts with a slow, purposeful approach with a loose fist. Focus on the medial arch through the flexor hallucis brevis up to the cuboid origin point.
