Massage Technique: Myofascial release for the anterior/lateral pelvis

My new book is out! It's called Massage Is Weird: https://massagesloth.com/book/
I call this massage technique the "ilium sandwich." By contacting both iliacus and gluteus medius at the same time, there's a very interesting myofascial sensation that can be useful for clients with anterior or lateral hip pain.

When palpating for the iliacus, use the ASIS as a guide. Dip into the iliac fossa just medial to the ASIS, feeling for the broad surface of iliacus. If you move too far inferiorly, you'll encounter a thick, unyielding structure. This is the inguinal ligament, which iliacus runs under. There's no need to massage the ligament directly (it won't "release" or anything like that), but it is interesting to note that the hip flexors may be responsible for pain along this ligament. Working with the muscles may relieve pain here.

When contacting gluteus medius, make sure that you're lateral to the ASIS, and that you're inferior to the iliac crest. If you palpate the crest of the ilium and the greater trochanter, everything between those points will affect glut medius.

Go slowly with both of these contacts, and don't feel like you need to do any "digging" or trigger point work. As far as myofascial release is concerned, the important part is contacting both sides of the ilium in a conscientious and comfortable way. Everything else is accomplished by time, and optionally by client engagement.
