Matera. One of the oldest cities on earth, it has been inhabited by humans since the Neolithic period. A city trip to Matera is like a journey into another time, another world. Our vacation through the south of Italy continues to the capital of the region, Basilicata. If we were just expecting a tour of the city, we get a big surprise... and are completely thrilled by the mysteries that lie hidden here...
The small southern Italian town of Matera is famous for its characteristic old town, the Sassi, which consists of a stone labyrinth of cave dwellings, narrow streets and winding stairs. The uniqueness of the Sassi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and in 2019 Matera even received the title of European Capital of Culture. Many churches and museums worth seeing are waiting to be discovered. But sightseeing, shopping and very good restaurants are not everything: Matera is located directly on a natural park, the Murgia materata, where hours of hiking and exploring are possible. Ancient caves as evidence of early human civilization, impressive rock churches, spectacular views of the skyline of Matera... pure history and culture is the order of the day. At the end of our threeday stay, we don't have enough time to explore the city's secrets and treasures. One thing is certain for us: we will definitely be back!
