Columbia University

Maureen E. Raymo, a professor of Earth and Climate Science and the interim director of Columbia University’s LamontDoherty Earth Observatory, uses a new children’s picture book, “Ocean Speaks” by Jess Keating with Illustrations by Katie Hickey (Tundra Books), to start a conversation about the pioneering Lamont geologist Marie Tharp who would have celebrated her 100th birthday on July 30. Raymo, a paleoceanographer and marine geologist, talks about why Tharp is an inspiring figure to her personally as both a woman and a scientist, and how Tharp’s work remains relevant today.
