MayThurner Syndrome Treatment New Haven CT by the best vascular surgeons serving Milford, Bridgeport, Stamford, and all of southwestern Connecticut, helps restore healthy blood circulation.

MayThurner Syndrome, also known as iliac vein compression occurs when the iliac artery compresses the iliac vein against the spine.

The iliac vein helps carry the blood out of the legs, upwards toward the heart.

When the iliac vein becomes compressed, it restricts blood flow out of the legs. This causes the blood to accumulate in the leg, causing leg swelling, leg pain, and venous insufficiency.

At Milford Vascular Institute, boardcertified vascular surgeon Dr. David Esposito, and boardcertified interventional radiologist Dr. Paul Davis work together in their officebased laboratory to treat MayThurner Syndrome.

In this video, you can watch Dr. Esposito and Dr. Davis perform minimallyinvasive endovascular surgery to place a balloon and a stent inside the compressed iliac vein to open it up fully and restore healthy blood flow.

They use the IVUS procedure (intravascular ultrasound) to take ultrasound images from inside the iliac vein to determine exactly where and how much the iliac vein is being compressed.

Using IVUS, they can determine a percentage of compression. This helps them decide if a stent is necessary to hold open the vein.

In this case, it was determined that a stent was necessary, and so it was placed inside the iliac vein.

The stent will remain in the patient's iliac vein indefinitely, as it will continue to hold the iliac vein open and prevent the iliac artery from compressing it again.

With the iliac vein being completely opened, blood can flow freely out of the leg toward the heart.

Within 68 weeks after MayThurner Syndrome treatment, the patient's leg swelling will be eliminated and she can enjoy healthy legs again.

If you are experiencing leg pain or leg swelling, especially if the swelling is only in the left leg, you may be suffering from iliac vein compression (MayThurner Syndrome) and it is recommended to have a vascular consultation with a vascular specialist.
