Renowned Paediatric Surgeon Dr. Shandip Kumar Sinha is the Senior Consultant of Paediatric Surgery at Madhukar Rainbow Children’s Hospital, Malviya Nagar, Delhi, India.

In this video, he talks about Urinary Incontinence in children. Incontinence can be in the daytime, which is known as Diurnal Incontinence, or at night called Nocturnal Enuresis. It can be continuous as well as intermittent, depending upon its frequency. Such condition gets cured on its own by 7 to 10 years of age, but in case it persists, immediate evaluation by a Paediatric Surgeon is needed.

Urine Routine, Microscopy, Urine Culture, and Sensitivity are a few of the tests performed to detect infection in the bladder. Other investigation techniques include Ultrasound of the Kidney and the Urinary Bladder to ascertain whether surgical intervention is needed or not.
Medical Management of incontinence involves medications, Cognitive Therapy, keeping alarm clocks, etc. However, some of the medical conditions like Ectopic Ureter, Duplex Kidney, Exstrophy Bladder, and Posterior Urethral Valves (PUVs) require surgical intervention, which is done through minimally invasive methods. Preoperative checkup comprises of tests like Urodynamic and Micturating Cystourethrogram, which are done to chart out the appropriate plan of action. These surgeries should be executed in stateoftheart medical facilities having proper anesthesia machines and intensive care units.
Postsurgery, these children lead normal life. Since Urinary Incontinence affects children psychologically as well, therefore, earlier intervention improves not only their physical health but also their mental health.
