MERLEAU-PONTY: Is my body my body? Olivier Dekens

Editions M-Editer

Our body experiences it as part of ourselves. But this experience is misleading. Indeed, we call the body both what we can perceive and what we cannot perceive without it. Thus, as far as I can perceive it, my body is one thing in the world: it is the objective body that I have and without which I cannot be in the world. I have a body. But I'm not that body. So, if I'm not this objective and anonymous body that I have and that science describes me perfectly. What is this body that I am and that I perceive?
Olivier DEKENS is an associate professor of philosophy in literary preparatory classes and the author of numerous books devoted to the history of modern and contemporary philosophy.
