The son of a goalkeeper, Mert Günok grew up wearing goalkeeper's gloves.

While playing with his friends on the carpet pitch, he was spotted by Şevket Yılmaz, then president of the 1907 club.

He was so talented in basketball that Efes wanted to sign him, but he followed his idol Rüştü Reçber.

He waited on the bench until he was 30, and at 34 he suffered the worst injury of his career.

Now he is protecting not just the goal, but Turkey's hopes.
