You can make it if you try! This formula is widely accepted, as is the belief that success and prosperity are deserved by those who enjoy them. Who is successful in our society and why? Under the socially uncontroversial mantra "If you work hard, you can achieve anything," we have come to believe that everyone gets exactly what he or she deserves. The beneficiaries of this system, which ascribes success to merit and talent, assume that they deserve their success because they have worked hard for it. By reverse implication, this means that those who fail have but themselves to blame. As a result, those who lose out within this system increasingly turn against the social elites and perceive meritocracy as tyranny. Michael Sandel, professor at Harvard University and one of the most successful philosophers of our time, has written a book precisely on this thesis. In this conversation with Barbara Bleisch he says that we shouldn’t cling to a divisive ethic of success and arm everyone to compete, but put the dignity of work back at the heart of the social debate and develop a policy of the common good that benefits everyone.
