In this video, Anthony Sequeira covers an introduction to fibre channel over ethernet (FCoE). Traditional data centers segregate LAN and SAN traffic, equipment, and links — but what if you could marry those two and reap the best of both worlds? FCoE offers that capability.

Traditionally, data centers have separated LAN and SAN traffic, equipment, and links. There are benefits to this, but you’ll also encounter distinct disadvantages. Fibre channel over ethernet, or FCoE, allows us to combine both of those processes and obtain the benefits each offers without sacrificing performance. This includes a dramatic simplification in cabling, as well as a reduction in the number of different server adaptors system administrators need to manage. Converged network adaptors (CNAs) play a crucial role in this process. Unifying the traffic would allow you to take advantage of layer 2 domains with multipath capabilities, and that’s just the start of the numerous benefits.
