The LanceRs are modernized MiG21s that were given new avionics for allweather operations, more modern avionics and the ability to employ PGMs (Precision Guided Munitions).
The MiG21 LanceR (Lance for weapon and R for Romania) upgrade program was designed to increase of the combat capability and eventually NATO interoperability (Romania became a member of NATO on April 1, 2004), through the installation of an advanced avionics package. The upgrade was to be compatible with the packages installed on 5th generation combat aircraft. Improvements to the aircraft included an improved pilotvehicle interface (PVI) in the cockpit redesign, enhanced warning systems and the ability to operate at night and during adverse weather conditions. The upgrade enabled the use of both Western and Eastern weapons, together with an increase of the survivability within a hostile environment during air combat with the installation of a new self protection system.
Three variants of LanceR went into service; the LanceRA which was a single seat fighterbomber for Close Air Support, the LanceRB a two seat trainer and the LanceRC which was a singleseat interceptor for Air Defence. The first LanceR squadron was formed at Bacau on May 8, 1997.
The first prototype MiG21 LanceRA (9809) was flown on August 22, 1995, followed by the LanceRB (327) on May 6, 1996. The LanceRC prototype (6607) first flew on November 6, 1996.
The LanceR fleet is now the backbone of the RoAF, performing air defence, close air support and training roles. The aircraft is unusual in now being able to carry both Eastern and Western armament. The LanceR was cleared for missiles such as the R60, R73 and Python 3 IR airtoair missiles, 250lb and 500lb bombs, laser guided bombs (LGB), targeting and ECM. Some of the LancerAs were also equipped with Rafael Litening targeting pods or Elbit/Aerostar Airborne Reconnaissance Pods. The LanceR's have now participated successfully in many NATO exercises. The upgraded aircraft have demonstrated greatly improved readiness levels, over their previous status, and comparable to other NATO members.
A total of 110 MiG21s were modernized under the LanceR designation. Today, 36 Lancers are operational for the RoAF.

Näytöksessä lensi kaksi Romanian Ilmavoimien MiG21 konetta. Romanian Ilmavoimien MiG21 koneita kutsutaan nimellä Lancer. Koneissa on täysin uusi länsimainen hävittäjätutka sekä elektroniikka ja varustukseltaan ne vastaavat nykyisiä länsimaisia hävittäjiä. Romania päätti modifioida omat MiG21 koneensa länsimaiseksi. Ensimmäinen modifioitu kone lensi 1996 ja kaikkiaan 114 konetta modifioitiin. Suomessa viimeinen MiG21lento tapahtui 7.3.1998 kun kapteeni Yrjö Rantamäki lensi viimeisen MiG21 lennon Rissalassa. Tämän jälkeen ei tätä ikonista itärautaa ole Suomessa nähty. MiG21 koneita käyttää laajassa mittakaavassa Euroopassa vain Romanian Ilmavoimat.

Suomen Ilmailuliiton vuoden 2016 päälentonäytös järjestetään 18.19.6.2016 Kuopiossa Rissalan lentokentällä.
Vajaan kymmenen vuoden tauon jälkeen päälentonäytös palaa Kuopioon. Suuri yleisö ja alan harrastajat ovat suuresti muistelleet Rissalassa järjestettäviä lentonäytöksiä jotka ovat keränneet kymmeniä tuhansia tapahtumasta kiinnostuneita Rissalan lentokentälle. Monipuolisen ja lentoohjelman lisäksi tiedossa on ainutlaatuinen maanäyttely sekä monipuolista oheisohjelmaa koko perheelle.

Tour de Sky – Kuopio International Airshow June 18.19, 2016 is the main airshow event in Finland 2016. Airshow is organized by The Finnish Aeronautical Association (FAA) in cooperation with First Event Ltd. FAA’s annual airshow is the biggest aviation event each year in Finland. Airshow is organized each year in different city / airport to cover the whole country. Local flying and skydiving clubs are traditionally also working for the show. The main airshow returns to Kuopio International Airport after nine years. Finland’s main annual airshow is also the main annual airshow for Finnish Air Force, Army Aviation and Border Guard. Therefore the airshow is organized with close cooperation with them.
